Vacation is inherently meant to be a relaxing experience, but hours spent seated in the car or on a plane can leave you needing a bit of unwinding before your vacation can officially begin. If you’re feeling stiff, try a few easy yoga poses for relaxation you can do at home or at your vacation rental:
Easy Seated Position
First things first – let’s breathe. Sit in a comfortable cross-legged position with your hands resting on your knees, palms facing up toward the sky. Close your eyes and bring your focus to your breath. Take six deep breaths, focusing on inhaling for a count of three to five seconds and exhaling for a count of three to five seconds, pausing for a second in between.
Legs up the Wall
Sore legs and feet? Find an open wall, and lay on your back with your hips close to the wall. Extend your legs so that they rest against the wall, creating a right angle between your torso and legs. Stay in this position for a few minutes and feel your legs relax.
To stretch your spine after a long period of being seated, lay on your back. Draw both knees to your chest, and hug them closer with both arms. If it is comfortable for you, you can gently rock from side to side to massage your spine.
Standing Forward Bend
Stand with your feet hip-distance apart. Slowly fold so that your hands are reaching for or touching the ground. Allow your band and head to relax completely to loosen hamstrings.
Start on all fours with your knees under your hips and your hands under your shoulders. Slowly increase the curve of your back so that you round toward the sky, and let your head fall to the floor. Come back to the starting position, and repeat the move 4-10 times.
Get on all fours with your knees under your hips and your hands under your shoulders. Slowly shift your hips back until the reach your heels, or come as far as you can down toward the floor. Reach your hands forward and allow your forehead to rest on your mat.
It will only take a few minutes to unwind using these yoga positions, and you will give your body and mind a chance to reset after the stress of traveling to your destination. If you are looking for more than these basic yoga poses, search for a studio in the area. Many offer a free first class or the ability to sign up for a single class while you are on vacation.
To start each vacation day refreshed, use these poses each morning in your vacation rental home.
