Canoeing the Blackwater River
Northwest Florida is known not only for its beaches, but for its pristine rivers and surrounding forests. The Blackwater River is the panhandle’s main and most unspoiled body of water, flowing from southern Alabama and through three Florida counties before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. It’s quiet, shaded 56 miles through cypress swamps and pine forests make the Blackwater canoeing fun, with locals and visitors alike taking full advantage of this tranquil river’s cool, dark waters.
Hiking and Biking the Florida Panhandle
With Florida’s climate on your side, hiking and biking in the area is great any time of year. Many Florida biking trails are along the beach, making for some great views, and during those hot summer days, great for a dip in the water to cool off. For those looking for something to brag about, try hitting the 32-mile long Florida Trail.
Hit the Beach
Head to the beach for a soccer game, a round of volleyball, a jog or another one of your favorite activities on the grass. Once you’ve worked up a sweat, jump in the water to cool off and swim around. If you have beach bums in the crowd, they can relax in the sand while the rest of you are having some fun. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has ridden a wave of popularity for the past decade, and about 3 million Americans now participate in the sport. While SUP was born on the ocean waves, people in the region paddle every body of water you can imagine, from back bays to lakes, rivers and streams. Compared to many other outdoor activities, stand-up paddleboarding is pretty easy to learn and you don’t have to be super fit or exceptionally coordinated. Check out some of these tips for beginners.
