The Charleston area is well-known for its wonderful cuisine. Many of the area’s chefs focus on using as many homegrown ingredients as possible, so locals and visitors alike can experience the best that South Carolina has to offer. As autumn brings fresh crops to the Lowcountry, take the family to Charleston’s Islands in the fall to enjoy the quiet beaches and gorgeous foliage, and show off your chef skills by turning the local harvest into your own vacation dishes.
After you get situated in your Charleston vacation rental’s kitchen, head to Boone Hall Farms, located in Mount Pleasant, off Highway 17. There you will find seasonal, locally-grown vegetables that you can pick yourself, as well as the Boone Hall Farms market. The market features local produce like South Carolina peaches as well as fresh catches just off the docks. The Charleston farmer’s market is open year-round, but be sure to call ahead if you want to do the picking yourself so you can see what’s ripe for the picking.
In addition to being a great source for fresh local fruits, vegetables, seafood and meats, the fall Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch is a site to see! Open for the month of October, you can hand choose your pumpkin and peruse other fall-themed items like décor, jellies, jams and fresh produce. The Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch offers fun for the whole family, with two corn mazes to explore while you’re there. The smaller maze is perfect for families with younger children, while the larger one covers the majority of the corn field with complex twists and turns. After you make it out, bring your pumpkins back to your rental home and have fun carving vacation designs. Then roast up the seeds, and settle in for a family movie night.
