If fresh seafood is what you’re craving, visitors know that Hatteras Island can serve it up right. Many restaurants on the island specialize in fresh dishes with the catch of the day, clams, oysters, and local shrimp, so you won’t be disappointed. But what many people don’t know are the little hidden gems that may not serve fish, but are still well-known for other specialties. Here are a few of our local team’s favorite places to eat in Hatteras, NC and the dishes they recommend ordering:
Hatteras Sol Waterfront Grill
Ask any local where to eat in Hatteras and they will tell you about The Sol. What to try? Any and everything – it’s all delicious. The Oysters Rockefeller are a great place to start for a southern-style version of the well-known dish. Feeling adventurous? Order the whole fried snapper. Before dinner, while you wait for your table, ask for one of their daily drink specials and head out to the porch to enjoy the soundside view.
Insider Tip: The Bananas Foster Cheesecake is to die for. All of the Hatteras restaurant’s homemade desserts are compliments of the Scratchmade Snackery, located just down the highway.
Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe
Famous for their Apple Uglies, Orange Blossom is a must-visit when you’re on the island. Fresh-made donuts, pastries and breakfast sandwiches will start your day off right. Grab some Apple Uglies and a cup of coffee, and head back to your rental home to kick back and soak up the morning.
Insider Tip: The Apple Uglies are perfect for sharing, and the kids will love the double-dipped donut holes.
If you want dinner with a view, Breakwater is one of the best restaurants on Hatteras Island. Order an Orange Crush to sip and enjoy an appetizer on the deck that overlooks the Pamlico Sound. For dinner, start with the Firecracker Shrimp appetizer. Then for your main course, try the Tuna Tortilla – a delicious chunk of tuna cooked to your liking served with rice and beans.
Insider Tip: Bring your camera, and head outside when the sun starts setting. You cannot beat the view of the sunset over the Pamlico Sound from their back deck.
Harbor House Seafood
Make use of your rental home’s kitchen and whip up some of that fresh seafood you don’t get at home. Head to Harbor House Seafood to choose from a large selection of the freshest seafood (some of which was likely caught that morning). Ask Vicky, the owner, what she suggests. Get a few filets of fish and a few pounds of shrimp – they’ll even steam them for you. Toss some kielbasa, corn, clams and potatoes in with the shrimp for a delicious Hatteras-style clam bake the whole crew will enjoy.
Insider Tip: Mrs. Vicky’s famous shrimp salad is perfect for the beach – grab some to bring with you the next morning.
Sometimes you just need some pizza. It’s easy to call in a few pies and bring them back to your vacation home to enjoy with the gang. Gingerbread House offers some of the best pizza on the island. Try their California pie with sweet pineapple, tangy cilantro and salty bacon, or go with the classic hand-tossed pepperoni. When you pick up your order, don’t skip over their bakery treats!
Insider Tip: Grab a half dozen of their fresh-made gingerbread cookies. It’s in the name, and they’re delicious!
The best spot for lunch? A little happening place tucked away in a strip mall called Buxton Munch. This groovy joint may not look like much from the outside, but once you step inside the vibrant décor makes you feel right at home. Their menu is packed with options of delicious wraps, quesadillas, fish tacos, and sandwiches to please everyone in the group.
Insider Tip: The fresh fish tacos are what the Munch is famous for. Served with all the taco fixings, they’re a must-try. If seafood isn’t your thing, the chicken ranch wrap is a local favorite.
If your mouth’s watering, start planning your trip by finding a beach rental home.
