Living on a farm is a dream for many cubicle warriors. Fresh air, living off the land, rustic cottages… sounds idyllic! The hard labor of tilling the land and taking care of the animals may not be part of that daydream for most, though.
The solution is to rent a cottage on a working farm for a week or two. There are more farm stay vacation options than you may think, and working farms make for beautifully romantic getaways for couples, or a fun change of scenery for families. Here are a few of our favorites from the U.K.:
Knowe Head Barn, Slaggyford, Northumberland, England
Knowe Head Barn is an ideal location for a couple looking to get away and explore Hadrian’s Wall and the Lake District. The barn-turned-cottage sits in a stunningly elevated position on private farmland, leading to spectacular views. Inside, grand picture windows are highlighted by exposed beams, giving a feeling of rustic elegance in the living areas. When you stay in this barn, you have access to a lovely half-mile private road that winds through beautiful woodland and is home to a spectacular waterfall.
Exmoor Farm Cottages – Swallows Nest, Wheddon Cross, Somerset, England
Set around the yard of the owner’s small farm, these two classic cottages are perfect for those seeking some peace and quiet while exploring the beautiful area of Exmoor and Somerset. Private deck areas provide great outdoor spaces to enjoy the view of Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor’s highest point, along with the green farmland. Don’t head indoors too quickly after the sun goes down – this area is known for its dark skies, so you may see more stars than you have ever imagined.
Sally’s Nest and Carol’s Cottage, Wenhaston, England
The owners of this land converted two old farm buildings into cozy cottages. Both overlook a 70-acre farm. After exploring the farmland, head to the nearby sandy beaches or explore the area’s historical castles for a truly versatile country getaway.
The Joinery, Gilsland, Cumbria
The Joinery is set on secluded farmland that is home to a family-run livestock farm and is connected to the main farmhouse. The interior features lovely exposed beams and comfortable furniture, along with striking vistas. Nearby you will find excellent walking and cycling trails. The town is home to fun country shows and farmers’ markets. Shops and pubs are a mere two miles away.
Cumberland Betty, Askam-in-Furness, Cumbria, England
This incredibly charming, bright blue Shepard’s hut is positioned on a working farm with panoramic views of the waterways of the Duddon Estuary. There is a lovely patio where you and your beau can enjoy a glass of wine and watch the sun set over the gorgeous vistas. Inside, a wood burning stove keeps things cozy when the temperature drops. Shops, pubs and a railway station are less than a mile off site. And if you’d like to bring your pet along, feel free – it is a farm, after all!
