How to Stress Less While En-route

Traveling to your vacation destination can be an enjoyable part of getting away…. but not if you are hungry, lost, or uncomfortable. In fact, 49% of vacationers agree that traveling to your destination causes stress, according to a Wyndham Vacation Rentals survey. To ensure you can start relaxing on the trip instead of stressing, preparation is key. Here are 4 helpful ways to do that:

air travel

Prep for air travel: Airplane travel with little ones can be stressful. Three basic elements can get you through: plan ahead with lots of things to keep them busy, add an hour to your pre-kid arrival time and use strategic seating based on your child’s personality (keep bickering siblings away from one another and alternate adult and child). Pack the car with the road trip essentials: Loading the family car for a vacation or road trip —kids and cargo—can feel complicated and overwhelming. To start, make sure the kids have plenty to do by filling up an activity backpack with lots of diversions from coloring to music. Keep cleaning items with you for those inevitable spills. Here are some more tips for packing up the car.

getting to destination

Map out your route ahead of time: Don’t wait until you’re on the road to plug your destination into your maps app. Take a look at your route ahead of time so that you’re familiar with it to avoid the panic that ensues when you reach a fork in the road and your GPS isn’t keeping up. It’s also wise to download maps that can be used offline. Here’s how to do that with Google Maps.

Plan meals instead of winging it on the road: Hunger makes every stressful situation or boring car ride feel catastrophic. To avoid that “hangry” reaction from children (or the adults!), pack healthy snacks and sandwiches for the car ride. If you’re taking a long road trip, it’s a good idea to research a couple places where you can grab a bite ahead of time. That way, you’ll know you have a place to stop where everyone can get something they like and you can get back on the road quickly.
